Welcome to the Woods!
Congratulations on picking up Fungus Foray DX! You are about to embark on a tiny forest adventure for Game Boy Color. Grab your basket, keep your eyes peeled for mushrooms, and watch your step — the woods are full of surprises.
This manual will teach you everything you need to know to become a master forager. Whether you play solo, pass the Game Boy to a friend, or compete for the highest score across seeded levels — the forest awaits!
Getting Started
Insert the cartridge into your Game Boy Color and power on. After the title screen, you will see the level preview. Each level is a bite-sized puzzle board — your goal is to collect every mushroom on the screen.
You play as a brave forager (choose Boy or Girl). Use the D-Pad to look around, the B button to move or push boulders, and the A button to end your turn early. When your turn is over, the forest creatures move!

Action Points (AP)
You start each turn with 3 AP — action points, shown as little glowing dots at the bottom of the screen. Each dot represents one unit of energy. Plan your turn carefully!

🍄 Mushrooms
These are your goal! Collect every mushroom on the board to clear the level and advance to the next. Each mushroom you grab adds +100 points to your score.
🌿 Bushes
Dense undergrowth that slows you down. Walking through a bush costs 3 AP instead of 1. But brave foragers earn +10 points for taking the hard path!
💧 Water
Slippery, impassable water tiles. You cannot walk on water — but snakes can slither right over it! Use this to your advantage. Push a boulder into water and it sinks, clearing the way.
🪨 Boulders
Heavy rocks you can push (2 AP). Push a boulder onto an enemy to eliminate it — earning +200 points! The boulder is destroyed in the process. Push a boulder into water and it sinks.
Boulders also block enemy patrol paths, giving you control over the board.
🐍 Snakes
These slithery foes patrol left and right in a fixed pattern. They can cross water and will skip over mushrooms. If a snake touches you — game over!
🕷️ Spiders
Spiders patrol in a circular pattern (a 2×2 square). They cannot cross water. Like snakes, they skip over mushrooms and will end your game on contact.

Your current score is displayed in the bottom-left corner of the screen. The final score appears on the Game Over screen.
Level Progression
Each level is deterministically generated from a seed number. This means:
- Level 1 always has the same layout every time you play
- Level 2 always has its own unique layout
- And so on — forever!
Clear all mushrooms on a level to advance to the next. If a creature catches you, you restart from Level 1. How far can you go?
Tips & Tricks
- Watch patrol patterns. Snakes go left-right, spiders go in circles. Learn the rhythm!
- Boulders are your best friend. Push them into enemy paths to block them, or onto enemies to eliminate them.
- Water is a tool. Snakes can cross it. You can sink boulders into it. Use it to shape the board.
- Don't waste AP. Ending your turn early costs 5 points — only do it if you're in danger.
- Bushes are risky but rewarding. They cost 3 AP but give you +10 points. Worth it if you have AP to spare.
- Plan two turns ahead. After you move, the creatures move. Think about where they'll be!
